Sunday Times 'Amo Amas Amusical'

Amo Amas Amusical deserved to be a television programme, not that any BBC TV commissioner would countenance making an entertainment based on the unusual history of Kennedy's Latin primer, even one presented by Mary Beard.  It was charming on the radio, original music, singers, piano, jokes, story and all.  But I was in the (jam-packed) BBC Radio Theatre when it was recorded and I can tell you that it was a treat to see the singers nipping through the nifty lyrics, watch a couple of female historians slip into the armchair next to Mary's, and note her mild impatience with having to do final retakes of some bits of script.  The producer, Beaty Rubens, always makes good radio programmes, but this was a super-duper show, a model of exposition, a delight.
